HURRICANE ISABEL FORCES RACE CANCELLATION
Unfortunately, due to Hurricane Isabel, State and City Authorities have strongly advised the
Manhattan Island Foundation to cancel the 2003
Little Red Lighthouse swim scheduled for this Saturday, September 20.
Though the weather for Saturday is forecasted to be ideal, the water conditions are predicted to be unsafe. There will likely be large amounts of debris and bacteria in the Hudson. Moreover, the tide could be extremely unpredictable and rough.
The cancellation is necessary for the following reasons:
Predicted Urban and tidal flooding
Predicted Coastal high surf
Predicted Tidal departures of 2 to 3 feet above normal on Friday
Predicted Strong Gusty Winds – causing excess debris in the water
Predicted Moderate rainfall forecasts of over 1 to 2 inches
Unusually high bacteria levels
Due to the complexity of putting on an event of this distance, and the necessity for perfect tidal conditions, we cannot reschedule the swim this season.
The Foundation is very disappointed to cancel the Little Red Lighthouse Swim. We know that the participants have trained hard and are equally disappointed. Since the event expenses have already been incurred, we cannot offer a refund to swimmers. We will mail the swimcaps and T-shirts to each of the participants. Moreover, you will each benefit from a one-time, single event, 50% discount in any of the Foundation’s swim series race (excluding the Manhattan Island Swim) in 2004.
Additionally, our tribute and remembrance for Jeffrey Wortman is postponed. However, there will be a social gathering for his friends and family on Sunday, September 21st at 4:00pm at Miss Elle’s on West 79th Street between Broadway and Amsterdam. Please try to attend.
