Lovato, Gollnick claim inaugural Ironman USA Coeur d’Alene triathlon

COUER D’ALENE, IDAHO-Michael Lovato (Boulder, Colo.) and Heather Gollnick
(Hartford, Wisc.) claimed the men’s and women’s title at the inaugural Ironman
USA Coeur d’Alene Triathlon held Sunday in Coeur d’Alene.
More than 1,500 athletes competed in the inaugural event, held in Kootenai
County and parts of Washington State.
The 29-year-old Lovato used a solid bike and a superb run to win the
first Ironman title of his career with an overall time of eight hours, 40
minutes, and 59 seconds.
Spencer Smith of Great Britain set the pace taking over the overall
lead early in the bike and holding it all the way to mile two of the run. But
Lovato was able to overtake the British standout, and Smith later pulled out of
the event.
Lovato finished almost 20 minutes ahead of second-place finisher
Raynard Tissink of South Africa, who overcame two flats on the bike to register
an overall time of 9:00:05.
Matt Seeley (Polson, Mont.) who has claimed the Coeur d’Alene Short
Course Triathlon title five times in his career, finished third in 9:03:35,
with Ironman stalwarts Petr Vabrousek (Czech Republic) fourth in 9:13:30 and
Peter Kotland (Spartanburg, S.C.) finishing fifth in 9:19:27.
Gollnick, who is entering only her second season as a professional
triathlete, continued her impressive performances by claiming the second
Ironman title of her career.
The 33-year-old Gollnick overtook the field on the bike and posted a
strong run to finish with an overall time of 9:42:08.
Gollnick who claimed the inaugural Ironman Wisconsin title back in September of
2002, finished more than six minutes ahead of second-place finisher Lynley
Allison of New Zealand (9:48:13).
Allison and Monica Caplan (Boulder, Colo.) were the early women’s leaders at
the event, before being overtaken by Gollnick. Caplan finished third overall in
10:04:21, with Michelle Deasy (San Francisco, Calif.) fourth in 10:12:45 and
Jess Draskau (Great Britain) fifth in 10:27:53.
The inaugural Ironman USA Coeur d’Alene triathlon is one of four full- distance Ironman events in the continental United States (HSBC Ironman USA Lake
Placid, Ironman Wisconsin and Ironman Florida being the other three). More than
20 countries were represented at the inaugural event, which featured 80
qualifying spots to the Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii in October,
as well as a $50,000 pro prize purse.

ANOTHER DAY AT THE BEACH ?

Today's Newsday includes an article from John Hanc, "Trying to Reach the Beach", documenting the annual Jones Beach Lifeguard test:

"Early last Sunday morning, an eager crowd of 144 people, ranging in age from 17 to 51, lined up under leaden skies outside the Jones Beach East Bathhouse. They weren't there for a leisurely swim or a stroll along the boardwalk. Rather, they were about to take the test for new lifeguards, competing for 14 openings among the 475 full- and part-time lifeguard positions at Long Island's state park beaches..."

Be sure to check out the "sidebar" item with the article for some Rules for the Open Water.

BIG RACE WEEKEND

This weekend's multisport contests continue at the Blackwater Eagleman (an Ironman Qualifier), as well as the Escape from Alcatraz Tri on the West Coast.

Tim DeBoom stands poised to repeat his victory at Blackwater, and Lori Bowden, Andrea Fisher and Fiona Docherty will duke it out in the women's race. The MetroTri digital image staff will capture all the action and have it ready for you by mid-week.

The Escape set a record last year when the 1000 race slots were filled in an hour and 45 minutes. The water is expected to be in the 50's. Brrrrrrr. Montauk, shmontauk, that's cold water!

MIGHTY MONTAUK TRIATHLON
Chuck Sperazza and Donna McMahon won this morning's Mighty Montauk. Results are available at the Start to Finish Website: Overall, Age Group and Clydesdale. Hopefully the splits will be posted soon.
